Bonding Through Breastfeeding – Kangaroo Mother Care Stirs Vitality in Infants
Medical professionals and other experts will tell you, breast milk is the best form of nutrition for newborn babies. Breastfeeding is one of the key steps in kangaroo mother care, a form of Newborn Baby care that has shown to increase the chances of survival in preterm infants. This steady flow of nutrition provides the necessary energy and substances needed to properly develop and recover from birth.
The nutritional benefits of breastfeeding are astounding, but there are other benefits of breastfeeding that help promote a healthy environment for the preterm infant to develop. The bond established between mother and baby during breastfeeding can be chemically attributed to oxytocin. Oxytocin is the hormone that is produced naturally in the body when we experience happy emotions. This flood of oxytocin helps to soothe the mother's anxiety, allowing her to be relaxed and respond more calmly. From the perspective of the infant, the mother represents food, comfort and safety, which make it instantly bonded to her. That bond has a therapeutic effect on preterm and low birth weight babies, and eases their levels of anxiety as well.
Kangaroo mother care methods provide the perfect environment to receive the optimal benefits of breastfeeding. With the infant wrapped against the skin of the mother's chest, it is able to readily access the breast at any time.
