Kamidoro Tama: Better than Mud Pies
The most important concept in Taoism is Wu-Wei, action without action, doing without striving. Taoist art is no different. Taoist art goes with the flow and tries to capture an impression of the subject matter, its essence in its most simple form.
Early Taoists sought seclusion from the world to commune with the Tao, with nature, and their art. They didn't seek fame and fortune from their artwork, but rather to express Tao truths.
This is the concept behind kamidoro tama.
While kamidoro tama has its roots deep in the heart of the art of Dorodango, it is fundamentally different. Kamidoro tama is supposed to help you understand the basic Taoist truths. You cannot create a Tama by working it too hard; it will simply disintegrate in your hands if you do. We cannot achieve true perfection, so we must learn to appreciate the perfection of the tama that we create and thus learn to appreciate the imperfect perfection in others.
There seems to be a misconception that Dorodango will last forever. This simply is not true, when the core dries out, the outer shell will crumble and fall leaving only a dried out clump of clay. With kamidoro tama there are no such preconceived conceptions; we simply accept what is.
If in time, long or short, our kamidoro tama should collapse, we can pick up the pieces and start all over again. The paper-pulp core can be soaked and re-hydrated and the shattered crumbs of the outer shell can be powdered and re-used. The process can go on and on; perpetually recycling itself, just like nature, just like life.
The Taoist knows that nothing lasts forever and creating kamidoro tama allows him to join, to connect, and partake in the universal acts of creation, preservation and destruction. The kamidoro tama is a simple ball you hold in your hands. You have the power to shape it as you will. You have the power to achieve any state of perfection you want and that state can only be achieved if you act without action, do without doing.
